5 Day Berber Villages and Toubkal

Explore Berber Villages and Climb Toubkal

Do you want to get off the beaten track and experience traditional Berber village life before making an ascent of the highest mountain in North Africa? Then this trek is for you!

For the first two days we will take you into the lesser known valleys where you will trek through villages in the mountains, enjoy the tranquil environment and slowly wind your way up the beautiful valleys. Then we will head over towards the refuges, perhaps summiting Aguelzim on the way for the incomparable views of Toubkal from the summit. Once based at the high mountain refuge the main ascent begins, with ample time to acclimatise to the altitude. On your return to Imlil you will have experienced something which many of the peak-baggers will have missed – you will have sen first-hand how the fascinating Berbers have lived here for generations, and you will also have climbed the highest mountain in North Africa!

From a comfortable hotel in Ouirgane, we will guide you up the unexplored valley giving you a unique insight into the lifestyle of the Berber people, whose villages cling to the arid hillsides.
Starting gently and working up to average 10-12km of walking each day, during the course of the trip you will slowly acclimatise to the altitude and will have success in summiting Mount Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa and the climax of this trek.
The unique mixture of Berber villages and high mountains ensure that this trek will be the experience of a lifetime for you.

Looking all the way down the Hidden Valley towards Ouirgane

    Itinerary

    Arrival Day

Arrive in Marrakech, taxi transfer to the stunning Kasbah Africa

    Day 1

An easy acclimatisation walk up the Ouirgane valley to the spectacular village of Ait Aissa for the night, passing orchards of walnut and apple trees, and your first experience of Berber culture.

    Day 2

We wind our way higher through the terraced Berber villages to a lunch spot below a majestic waterfall. We then spend the night in a luxury gite in the old summer shepherding pastures of Azib Tamsoult. The views down the valley to the plains of Marrakech beyond are simply legendary, and you will begin to feel as though you are entering a different world.

    Day 3

A round-trip day walk gives you the opportunity to visit the stunning cliffs below the Tazaghart Plateau and a tiny mountaineering hut perched precariously above a waterfall. Beyond here lies a pristine natural world where eagles and vultures make their homes. Those with the energy for the ascent have the option of ascending to the coll or even to the summit of Tazaghart to visit the lost world of the 3800m high plateau. We then spend a second night at the lovely Azib Tamsoult.

    Day 4

We will leave this undiscovered valley behind and make our way over Aguelzim. The easy but relentless ascent of this 3500m mountain will reward you with the first views of the Toubkal Massif guarding the valley beyond like a prehistoric sentinel. We then wind our way down an easy mule track to the Mouflons refuge where hot showers, a luxurious heated lounge and good food await. This comfortable refuge will be your home for the next three nights.

    Day 5

Winding our way to the coll of Tizi n Ouanams, we have our first views over the back of the Atlas Mountains to the Sahara beyond. There is the optional ascent of Ras, the second highest mountain in the area and possibly your first 4000m peak. This mountain serves as good acclimatization for the next day.

    Day 6

The culmination of five days walking and adjusting to altitude mean that you will be more than ready for the climax of your trip. After an early start we will guide you up Jebel Toubkal, where you will be able to stand upon the highest point of North Africa and celebrate your success. The views down the long valleys and passes which have led you up to this point give a feeling of satisfaction and achievement that is incomparable. We descend back to the Mouflons refuge and a celebratory meal.

    Day 7

We leave behind the high mountain pastures and slowly descend to civilisation at the village of Imlil where a taxi will be waiting to transfer you back to Marrakesh.

    3 Day Toubkal Ascent

The classic three day Toubkal Ascent

The trek of choice for those who simply want to summit the highest mountain in North Africa, Jebel Toubkal. From Imlil we will take you directly up to the refuge for the night. An early start the next day, and you should summit Toubkal before lunchtime. After a second night at the refuge you will descend back to Imlil, enjoying the pleasant valleys and sense of accomplishment at having conquered this beautiful mountain. Note that due to the strenuous nature of this trek, and the fact that there is not much time to adjust to altitude, we recommend that you book the 4-day version if you have the time, especially in winter conditions.
