Here’s a quick Toubkal weather update. This past two days have seen a lot of precipitation in the High Atlas and Toubkal area.
The snow line has come down to approximately 3000m, and all the high mountains now have a good thick covering of snow. Above 3000m the high Atlas Mountains are in full winter condition. Crampons and ice axes will be required for anyone trying for the summit. Our chief muleteer was speaking to one of the managers of the Toubkal Refuge this afternoon on the phone. He informs us that the snow is knee deep around the refuges themselves.
Our group didn’t manage to get up to the refuge today as the rivers are all in spate and too dangerous to cross. Our mules couldn’t even get beyond the riverbed above Aroumd. At Sidi Chamharouch the river is apparently flowing OVER the bridge making it impassable.
High winds have also been a problem. We were being blown off our feet by gusts on the spur above Aroumd, below 2000m. No groups have been able to get down from the refuge today.
A group was also turned back on the Tizi n Tamatert (E of Imlil) today. The river which flows down across the road near Tachedirt village is in flood making it impossible to get to Tachedirt from Imlil.
The forecast is for this spell of bad weather to end in the next day or two, but until the rivers and streams have returned to their normal size it may still be hard to make progress anywhere.
Most streams in the area will be in flood. Landslides are also a serious risk now in the Atlas Mountains after this much rain and snow.
