Remote Camping on the Yagour Plateau

Camping on the Yagour Plateau

An ancient sacred plateau at 2400m altitude, the beauty of the remote mountains is all around. Explore prehistoric rock engravings, and enjoy the solitude and majesty of nature.

The Ourika valley begins an hour away from Marrakech, and we take a landrover high up into the mountains to the ancient village of Tizi Oucheg. The guesthouse here serves as our base before hiking up onto the plateau for several nights camping, There are options of doing a circular route passing wild waterfalls unfrequented by the tourist groups. The mountains here tower all around, and the feeling of remoteness and isolation still remains. An experience far off the beaten path, not to be missed!

Prehistoric rock art is found all over the Yagour Plateau, there are over 4000 images which have been counted so far! Connect with the prehistory of the first humans to come here.

This is a remote trek far off the beaten track. The Yagour (meaning “sacred” in ancient berber) has been traditional summer grazing pastures for millenia. Far away from the busyness of Toubkal, this is wilderness immersion at tis finest. If you are looking for a chance to get away, to reset, to get time to think and sit in solitude, then this is the experience for you. You will also be treated to local tajine and the hospitality of the tashelhayt berber people.

Itinerary

To make the most of the Yagour plateau we recommend three nights of camping and a night at the guesthouse each side, making it an expedition of six days, five nights. Shorter timeframes are possible, heading to the plateau for at least two nights camping.

Walking Distance

Day 1 up to the plateau:  10-14km up a 1000m zigzagging ascent

Inbetween days: we can explore the plateau with small excursions to the lake, or to rock engravings. Optionally you can face the challenge of ascending Adrar Meltzin, 3600m, a remote and unfrequented pyramidal peak towering over the plateau.

Descent day: 8km
